Client Brief

This project proposes the redesign of an existing two-storey heritage terrace house, with the addition of a new basement and attic level. Scope of works includes the adaptive re-use of the existing ground and first floors, creating a four-level private residence suited to contemporary family living while respecting the building’s heritage context. Key requirements include:

Complete a partial CAD documentation set, including general arrangement drawings and nominated details, to support the proposed interior modifications.
Provide detailed internal layouts that address circulation, zoning, and functionality.
Document key elements such as staircases, wet areas, and joinery to an appropriate level of construction detail.

Project Note

This project has been developed primarily for documentation purposes, with the design intent aimed at enhancing the apartment’s interior character and functionality.

The design introduces a refined, contemporary interior language, using a restrained material palette of off-form concrete, natural timber, and muted neutral tones to expand the narrow proportions and create a calm, tactile living environment. New interventions, such as a slender-profile staircase and clean-lined joinery, enhance spatial flow and natural light while sitting lightly within the terrace’s historic fabric. Through careful detailing and material simplicity, the design establishes a quiet dialogue between contemporary elements and the original 1890s structure.
